Confluence: From the Quiet Library to the Noisy Playground

For as long as I can remember, Confluence has been the quiet library of teamwork, the place we go to document, store, and organise.But after what I saw at Atlassian Team ’25, that era is officially over.

The message was clear:

Confluence is no longer where knowledge goes to live, it’s where knowledge comes to life.

We’ve all been part of teams where information lives in ten different places, documents, chats, sticky notes, and screenshots. Confluence is now reshaping that, transforming from a knowledge base into a true collaboration workspace, one where creating, consuming, curating, and transforming happen in the same flow.

This isn’t just “write it down so we don’t forget.”It’s “write it down so we can build on it.”

AI at the Core – Not an Afterthought

Atlassian made it clear: AI (and specifically Rovo) isn’t being bolted on. It’s being built in.

Their focus sits across four pillars:

2️⃣ Meeting users wherever they are, on mobile, in video, or through voice.

3️⃣ Unifying workflows across the teamwork cloud, high-value, end-to-end collaboration.

In short, Rovo isn’t just making Confluence smarter, it’s making teamwork seamless.

From Blank Page to Bold Ideas

We’ve all been there: staring at the dreaded blank Confluence page, waiting for inspiration to strike.With Create with Rovo (beta rolling out soon), that problem disappears.

You’ll be able to give Rovo a prompt, “Create a brainstorm for X” and instantly get a draft complete with context, files, and links. What’s more, it all starts in a private sandbox, so you can review, edit, and refine before publishing. That balance between speed and control is the magic.

From Sticky Notes to Smart Actions

One of my favourite demos at Team ’25 was seeing AI actually do something useful, not just talk about it.

Imagine a whiteboard full of ideas, sticky notes everywhere (we’ve all been there). Now imagine simply selecting them all and asking Rovo to group related notes together.

Done. What used to take half an hour of manual sorting now takes seconds.

Smart Sections and Live Docs - Real Collaboration

The new Smart Sections take collaboration to the next level:

• Drag Jira items into your Confluence sections and they’ll automatically assign to the right person.

• Create dependencies by literally drawing a line between boxes.

Confluence is also introducing Live Docs, which you can convert to standard pages and back.Think of it as the space for real-time teamwork, for brainstorms, editing together, and active iteration.

Smarter, Simpler Communication

Not everyone has time to read, and not every message is best written. That’s why I love the new audio briefings and Loom comment integration.

You can now highlight text in Confluence, set a tone, and generate a quick audio summary. Perfect for people on the move.Or, instead of typing feedback, record a Loom comment, richer context, fewer misunderstandings, and faster decisions.

Where It’s Headed

The biggest takeaway for me? Confluence is becoming the centre of teamwork, not just the archive of it.

It’s where we brainstorm, plan, assign, decide, and reflect, all in one space. The line between documentation and collaboration is disappearing, and frankly, it’s about time.

Atlassian isn’t just modernising Confluence, it’s redefining how teams create and connect. From the quiet library to the noisy playground, Confluence has found its voice.
