What is a “System of Work” and why do we need it?

detailing what is a system of work

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to dive into some of the insights Atlassian shared with partners following Team '25 in Anaheim and one idea that really stuck with me was their take on the System of Work. Now, I know what you're thinking… it sounds a bit like corporate jargon. But here’s the thing: it’s actually a pretty simple (and powerful) idea. It’s not about selling more software. It’s a shift in how we think about how work happens across organisations.

So, what is the System of Work?

At its heart, it’s a mindset. A new philosophy for how modern, technology-driven organisations can work better, by breaking silos, aligning goals, and bringing business and tech teams closer together. It’s about moving fast, together, with clarity, purpose, and yes, a little help from AI.

Here’s what makes it click for me:

  • Alignment to goals

Too often, teams are busy... but not always busy with the right things. The best teams are laser-focused on shared outcomes, not just outputs. That alignment creates clarity and impact.

  • Planning and tracking across teams

No more disconnected spreadsheets, rogue backlogs, or duplicated efforts. When everyone can see and contribute to the same plan, it’s way easier to adapt and execute, especially when things change (because they always do).

  • Unleashing knowledge

Knowledge shouldn’t live in someone’s head or get lost in meeting notes. It should be shared, searchable, and show up when you need it most, to make faster, smarter decisions.

  • AI as a teammate

This one’s big. AI isn’t just a productivity boost, it’s reshaping how work gets done. From smart search to actual AI agents that handle repetitive tasks, Atlassian is treating AI as part of the team, not just another tool.

All of this is now baked into Atlassian’s connected cloud platform, where tools like Jira, Confluence, and Loom are integrated with a shared data layer (they call it the “teamwork graph”), and new capabilities like Rovo bring AI-powered search and automation into the mix.

The takeaway?

This is not just about better software. It is about a smarter, more connected way to work, where teams are aligned, empowered, and moving faster with more clarity and purpose.

In a world where speed, adaptability, and focus matter more than ever, the System of Work is not just a nice idea. It might be exactly what we need.

And if you are wondering where to start, we can help.
